A little background and context
Monkeypox is a rare viral zoonotic disease (transmission from animals to humans) similar to human smallpox, whose causative agent, variola virus, is also a member of the Orthopoxvirus genus. Monkeypox is endemic to West and Central Africa, which means it is normally geographically limited to there.
On May 7, 2022 the monkeypox virus was detected in an individual who returned from Nigeria where the disease is endemic. An atypical outbreak of monkeypox was declared in the WHO European Region in May 2022, following reports of a number of cases across several Member States not linked to countries where the disease is endemic.
“The W.H.O.’s website reveals that humans may transmit monkeypox, which is a viral zoonotic disease [first discovered 1958 in laboratory monkeys hence the name “monkeypox”], by coming into contact with “live and dead animals through hunting and consumption of wild game or bush meat.” The public health organization notes that, while the animal reservoir for monkeypox remains unknown, scientists suspect it is “likely to be among rodents.” Other animal reservoirs of the disease include non-human primates.” [REF]
The disease causes patients to develop a rash with distinctive lesions that may number from a few to several thousand, depending on the case’s severity. Smallpox and monkeypox are closely related – the smallpox vaccine can be used for monkeypox.

Swap the word “small-pox” for COVID-19 – could this, in essence, be today?!
Respondent Millard pointed out “under the term ”small-pox” we are including two varieties of the disease so utterly different as regards their mortality. [that I didn’t know] that, as for statistical purposes, they are two distinct diseases:
(1) variola major
(2) variola minor
Variola minor occurs in the majority of cases with practically no deaths (bar “some intercurrent complication”) – a “non-fatal disease in vaccinated and unvaccinated alike.”
The small number of cases and deaths in the variola major group have isolated “outbreaks… among adults rather than among children of which “adults in most parts of the country are still, on the whole, a vaccinated class; therefore, it is not very surprising that many of these cases have been in vaccinated persons.”
