WHO Scientific Advisory Group on the Origins of Novel Pathogens (SAGO) established

The World Health Organisation (WHO) established the Scientific Advisory Group on the Origins of Novel Pathogens (SAGO) as part of their OneHealth initiative.  A call went out for experts on August 20, 2021, they held their first meeting on November 23, 2021. Justified becasue of the alleged "rapid emergence and spread of SARS-CoV-2" which "highlighted the importance of being prepared for any future event, to be able to identify novel pathogens early and to address the risk factors that contribute to their emergence and spread" [2] SAGO's mission is to "advise the Secretariat on technical and scientific considerations regarding emerging and re-emerging pathogens, and will be composed of experts acting in a personal capacity". August 20, 2021 SAGO's Terms of Refrence were published, and a call went out seeking "experts" to join, to be finalised by September 10, 2021 November 23, 2021 they held their first meeting [1, 3] Preliminary reports released in 2022 and 2023 - HERE September 4, 2024 - WHO launched SAGO's global framework to help Member States comprehensively investigate the origins of new and re-emerging pathogens. It's the "first unified, structured approach to investigating the origins of a novel pathogen". [4]

WHO declares “mpox” a PHEIC

On August 14, 2024 the WHO Director-General declared mpox (formally known as Monkey Pox) outbreak a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC).   Two years ago on July 23, 2022 Monkeypox was declared a PHEIC. [5] The WHO cited death rates 20 times higher than 2022-23 monkeypox outbreak which Dr Nass points out that "Obtaining an accurate death rate in the Democratic Republic of Congo where there are few roads and very little modern infrastructure is impossible". Dr. Ogoina also said this is a “new form of monkeypox” with “atypical lesions”—so what we need is to look at the genome and get an idea where it came from. FDA announces EUA for “2024-2025 Formula” of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines!

On August 22, 2024 the FDA announced the approval plus EUA of the 2024-2025 formula of the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA COVID-19 vaccines, that "include a monovalent (single) component that corresponds to the Omicron variant KP.2 strain of SARS-CoV-2".  Novavax did not get an approval. [1, 2, 3] New York Times reports many Americans, elderly and nursing home included, are NOT taking the booster shots, only 1/3 of nursing home residents are considered "up to date". “Vaccination continues to be the cornerstone of COVID-19 prevention,” said Peter Marks, M.D., Ph.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research.
